Ed Oswald, BetaNews: Starz’ Vongo video service has been selected as the premier movie store launch partner for Windows Vista, the US movie channel said Monday. In addition, Starz has partnered with Microsoft in order to bring its online service to television through either a compatible Media Center Extender device or the Xbox 360.

The agreement calls for users of Windows Vista Premium or Ultimate to be able to download content from Vongo and then stream it to any connected television. The two companies are also working on a Media Center-compatible interface for the service that works well from the so-called “10-foot interface.”

Bob Greene, Executive Vice President of Advanced Services, Starz: [from prepared statement] By working with Microsoft on the development of Vongo for Windows Vista with Windows Media Center, we have added the last important piece for consumers: to have a truly integrated digital entertainment experience whether they are on the road or in the living room.

Ed Oswald: Xbox 360 users would also gain the ability to play movies on the console, and thus on the TV, through this new agreement. Both Starz and Microsoft see this approach as a simple way for most consumers to enjoy the enhanced media capabilities of the game system without much technical knowledge.
